Dharavi was established in 1882 when the Britishers ruled India . Amid the eighteenth century spontaneous territories began to develop when the urbanization of Mumbai was going on. Slowly, the territory spread and the ghetto was born. 

Dharavi is spread over 535 acres of land. Dharavi divides  the two railway lines, the western and central rail route. It's neighbourhood by Mahim, Bandra, Mithi nadi to the north of Mumbai, Sion to it's south, and Matunga to the east.

Dharavi is profoundly populated.It is assumed that around a million people lives there. Around 600-2000 individuals per acre. The oldest mosque in dharavi is "The Badi Masgid" it was built in 1887. The famous temple  was established in 1913. The primary school in dharavi began in 1924.

Dharavi is the Hub of around 5000+ businesses and 15,000 standalone factories. Total turnover of dharavi is about $650 million to $1 billion.

Dharavi is known for cheap leather bags and leather goods. Few business people run a leather goods shops on the Sion-Bandra Link Road, people are spurned by the stench of leather workshops on 90 Feet Road.
